About Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine
Founded in 1954, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NUCM) is one of the oldest institutions in China, earning the distinction as the birthplace of TCM higher education. The University includes 2 campuses—the Hanzhong campus and the Xianlin campus. The first campus is located in the western part of the city, adjacent to the historic Black Dragon Lake. The second campus is situated along Xianlin Rd. It is an extensive campus, with digital and eco-friendly designed gardens. NUCM is one of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborative Centers on Traditional Medicine; the university is authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Public Health to be an International Acupuncture Training Center. It is also a training base for TCM teachers, a center for clinical pharmacology, a training center for overseas education approved by the State Administration of TCM and one of the first authorized TCM universities to enroll and train overseas students. At present, there are about 18,000 students studying on campus, including over 2,000 students who are studying their Master’s and Doctoral degrees, along with over 1,000 overseas students.
The university currently offers students three types of degrees: Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees. The bachelor’s program specializes in various scopes related to TCM. Some of the specialties include the field of medicine, management, science, economics and letters. The university does also offer other non-TCM specialties as they have a supporting role towards TCM. The university also has 3 post-doctorate research stations, along with 25 programs authorized to grant Doctoral degrees and 44 programs to grant Master’s degrees.
Nanjing International Education College (Hong Kong Macao and Taiwan Education Center) is responsible for enrollment and administration of overseas students. This college is a teaching unit within the NJUTCM and comprises of various general and individual services. All the teachers have great knowledge towards the history and development of TCM. The teachers understand international students’ individualities and specific requirements.
The Center for Chinese Language, the language-training branch of NJUCM, assists foreign students in the mastery of the Chinese language. It accepts both international students supported by government scholarship as well as self-supporting students. The center also provides Chinese Language courses related to Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ancient Chinese. With training received in these two areas, new students to Traditional Chinese Medicine will possess a strong foundation for their professional development in TCM.
NUCM values International Cooperation and academic exchange. Early in the year of 1993, it initiated a joint Bachelor program with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology of Australia. This making the university, the first university of TCM in China to begin international collaboration with a foreign nationally accredited university in the field of TCM higher education. Up till now, there are more than 8000 TCM professionals from over 90 countries that have trained with the International Education College.
